Haematology

Adolescents and Young Adults with Hematological Disorders: Reprint of: Acta Haematologica 2014 Vol.

Publishing date: 2014
The distinct biology of haematological disorders as well as other age-related issues in adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients deserves unique psychological and medical attention. It emphasizes the necessity for a treatment approach taking into consideration their special needs. These include fertility considerations, survivorship issues, psychological support, adherence to treatment difficulties and other dilemmas and problems exclusive to this group of patients. AYA patients may usually better support intensive treatments and if possible should be referred to special centres and participate in clinical trials. In recent years the focus on AYA patients in oncology and hemato-oncology has increased. Still a distinct approach to these patients is an unmet need. This

Fast Facts: Myeloproliferative Neoplasms

Author: Claire Harrison
Ruben Mesa
Publishing date: 2019
Presentation of the myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) varies widely, and correct diagnosis and management can be challenging, and is becoming more complex as understanding of the underlying molecular basis for these disorders emerges. Appropriate management is increasingly informed by accurate risk stratification founded on understanding of cytogenetic and molecular markers, as well as the clinical presentation. 'Fast Facts: myeloproliferative neoplasms' focuses on the three most common chronic MPNs: - Essential thrombocythemia (ET) - characterized by increased platelet count - Polycythemia vera (PV) - characterized by excessive production of red blood cells - Primary myelofibrosis - a more severe and heterogenous disorder that may overlap with ET and PV but

Fast Facts: Peripheral T-cell Lymphoma

Author: Christopher Fox
Francine Foss
Matthew Ahearne
Publishing date: 2019
The peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a heterogenous group of rare entities. Whilst cytogenetic and molecular identifiers are being identified, accurate diagnosis remains challenging, requiring careful, expert integration of the clinical and pathological findings. The treatment of PTCL is also challenging. Protocols for the different subtypes are only just beginning to emerge, hindered by the complexities of conducting trials in such uncommon and varied conditions. While first-line treatment with conventional chemotherapy is seldom curative, patients who achieve remission may be eligible for stem cell transplantation, offering the possibility of long-term disease control if not cure. Targeted biologics are also being developed as unique cytotoxic markers are

Fast Facts: Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Author: Marie Scully
Spero Cataland
Publishing date: 2020
Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) is a rare disorder of the blood coagulation system. In most cases, a lack of the ADAMTS13 enzyme leads to an accumulation of ultra-large von Willebrand factor molecules in the plasma which, in turn, initiate the formation of microscopic thromboses in small blood vessels. TTP is a medical emergency. Timely diagnosis and urgent and effective management are vital - mortality in those untreated is in the region of 90%. The understanding of TTP pathogenesis has increased markedly in recent decades. It is now known that TTP is acquired (immunemediated) or congenital, and that the most common type - the acquired form - predominantly affects women in their 40s. It is also clear that the prompt delivery of plasma exchange saves lives.

The CD-ROM offers various possibilities: 1. Users can search for filters with certain properties, entering information such as membrane material, sterilization type, surface area, ultrafiltration coefficient or producers. Search criteria can be modified throughout, thus giving an opportunity to refine the search at every step. Once the search process has been completed, a list of those hemodialyzers will appear which match the search criteria, providing an
