Professor Christian Andree has edited for the first time the complete correspondence of all Virchow’s surviving letters to Theodor Goldstücker, complemented by Goldstücker’s own letters to Virchow.The indologist Goldstücker (Königsberg 1821-1872 London) was one of the most important scholars of India of the modern age. As Professor of Sanskrit in London from 1851 onwards he exercised considerable influence on the English administration of justice in India. The correspondence offers a particularly revealing insight into the personal, academic and political understanding of two revolutionaries of 1848. The fascinating correspondence is prefaced by the first ever comprehensive scholarly biography of Goldstücker.
